The First Thing I Assumed Was Wrong

That is why lane markings vanish and a pedestrian can become invisible during those seconds. Your eyes are not failing. They were just never designed for this type of light in darkness.

This is the part most drivers, and most opticians, have been missing. The problem is not the intensity of the light. It is the colour of the light and what that colour does to your ability to see everything else.

Once I understood that, the failed solutions started making a lot more sense.


Why the Yellow Glasses in Your Glovebox Did Not Work

Many of my patients had already tried yellow driving glasses from Amazon or a motorway service station. Most threw them in a drawer within a week.

They were not wrong to try. The instinct was right. But the glasses dimmed everything equally, including the dark road they were trying to see.

A generic yellow tint reduces overall light. It cannot separate the blue wavelength from the warmer light your eyes need to see the road. You end up with less of everything, which means the bright car is still blinding you and the dark road around it is now even harder to see.
